Gamification in Odoo: how it works and the benefits for businesses

Gamification involves applying typical game elements – challenges, scoring, rankings, visual rewards – in the workplace to motivate employees. Odoo includes a dedicated Gamification module that transforms everyday tasks into more enjoyable activities. This makes work “more pleasant, increases engagement, and promotes a culture of healthy competition.” Several studies indicate that gamification increases employee involvement and productivity: for example, 83% of workers in gamified training feel motivated (compared to 61% in traditional training), and 90% say they are more productive when game elements are applied. Thus, implementing *gamification with *Odoo reinforces good habits, clear objectives, and real-time recognition, key factors for improving team performance.

Components of gamification in Odoo

Odoo gamifies work through various interconnected elements. Below, we summarize the main components:

● Challenges: these are specific or periodic missions assigned by a manager to specific teams or users. Each challenge has a period (weekly, monthly, etc.) and includes a set of objectives to achieve. When defining a challenge, the participating sellers or agents, the period (start and end), the measurable objectives, and the associated rewards are established. For example, a "Monthly Sales Challenge" can be created with objectives such as "total amount invoiced" or "new customers generated."

● Goals: these are concrete metrics that indicate what needs to be achieved in each challenge. They can be, for example, the number of new customers, sales volume, percentage of cases resolved, or response times to customers. Odoo allows for the creation of customized goal definitions according to the business model (such as “Total amount invoiced in the current month” or “Average time to close opportunities”). As each user works, Odoo progressively accumulates the values (for example, X euros invoiced) and visualizes their percentage of compliance with respect to the goal.

● Badges: are visual recognitions awarded when a challenge or special milestone is achieved. Badges are designed with their own image and name, and can be configured to be automatically awarded at the end of a challenge as a reward. In this way, an employee who excels in a challenge receives a badge, visible on their profile. Badges are a way to "gamify" day-to-day activities, positively reinforcing good performance.

● Experience Points (XP): every time a user meets goals or challenges, they receive points as a measure of progress. These points can be viewed on the profile and contribute to the ranking of employees. For example, the system can automatically generate "Experience Points" for each milestone achieved; these points appear on the user's profile and are visible to the rest of the team, fostering collective recognition. By themselves, they do not serve to level up like in video games; however, by adding badges that are automatically awarded upon reaching a certain number of XP, progression can be rewarded and leveling up can be simulated.

● Leaderboards: it is a public list that ranks participants based on their scores or achievements. The leaderboards can be individual or team-based, and can be filtered by period or type of objective. This creates a friendly competition: each employee can see their position in real-time compared to their peers. The leaderboard system provides immediate feedback: workers compare their performance with standards and colleagues. Overall, challenges, goals, badges, points, and leaderboards work together to create a game-like dynamic that encourages participation and personal growth within teams.

Benefits: motivation, performance, and commitment

Gamification in Odoo provides several measurable advantages to employees and the company:

● Innate motivation and clear objectives: The challenge and the reward appeal to the will to win and improve oneself. The emphasis on achieving concrete goals keeps interest alive. Data indicates that 83% of workers in gamified environments feel motivated. This translates to greater daily effort: 90% believe they work more productively with gamification.

● Constant feedback and recognition: Through the points and rankings system, each employee receives immediate feedback on their performance. When a person achieves a goal, they receive a badge and points that are published, which makes their success visible. Additionally, colleagues can automatically congratulate those who earn badges. This public recognition ensures that every effort is visible and valued, enhancing job satisfaction.

● Healthy competitiveness: Leaderboards encourage friendly competition among peers. Each user can see how they rise or fall in the ranking based on the goals achieved. This focused game context motivates employees to strive to surpass their colleagues in a constructive manner.

● Improvement of performance and learning: By emphasizing real business challenges, employees learn in a practical way. Goal-oriented decision-making (and the consequent rewards) helps to establish good habits. According to studies, implementing gamification can increase engagement by up to 48% and even make companies with gamified elements up to seven times more profitable. In summary, turning business indicators into playful elements makes teams work with more engagement and efficiency.
